Review of Culture International Edition The opium monopoly in the construction of Macao’s economy in the early 20th century

The highlight of Issue 66 of the Review of Culture is an article by historian Geoffrey C. Gunn, which explains how opium monopoly constructed the economy of Macao in the early 20th century, a research project supported by a grant from the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government.

The importance of translation in Macao is once again the object of analysis with two articles in this issue, one on legal translation and its application to the translation of Social Welfare Legislation, and the other one on the social and political impact of translation in mainland China and Macao.

In the historiographic field, two historians and regular contributors scrutinise the commercial activity of Canton, between the 17th and 19th centuries.

The module dedicated to the literary heritage of China concludes this issue with an analysis on Liu Xie's Wenxin Diaolong, one of the most important treatises of literary-critical practice in China´s history and a discussion on the political context of literary systems.
