Results of visitor expenditure survey for the 3rd Quarter of 2021


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending of visitors (excluding gaming expenses) boosted by 374.3% year-on-year to MOP4.80 billion in the third quarter of 2021, attributable to a surge of 143.6% in number of visitor arrivals and a growth of per-capita spending of visitors. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP4.22 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP580 million) soared by 481.3% and 102.8% year-on-year respectively. In the first three quarters of 2021, total spending of visitors amounted to MOP18.14 billion, an uplift of 199.3% year-on-year.

Per-capita spending of visitors was MOP2,626 in the third quarter, an increase of 94.7% year-on-year. Spending of visitors from mainland China leapt by 93.4%year-on-year to MOP2,597, with spending of those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (MOP5,917) growing by 52.3%. Meanwhile, per-capita spending of overnight visitors (MOP4,994) and same-day visitors (MOP590) recorded a rise of 74.8% and 2.4% year-on-year respectively.

As regards type of expense, visitors spent primarily on shopping (61.0% of per-capita spending) in the third quarter, which was followed by accommodation (18.6%) and food & beverage (15.9%). Per-capita shopping spending of visitors expanded by 77.6% year-on-year to MOP1,603, of which spending on cosmetics & perfume(MOP501) and handbags & shoes (MO313) grew by 22.4% and 530.2% respectively. Analysed by main purpose of visit, per-capita spending of visitors coming to Macao for vacation (MOP5,574) and shopping (MOP3,019) jumped by 36.1% and 186.0% year-on-year respectively.

With respect to visitors’ comments in the third quarter of 2021, the proportions of visitors who complimented on services of retail shops (93.2%) and restaurants (91.4%) both grew by 0.2 percentage points quarter-to-quarter; their satisfaction towards other services and facilities, however, registered decreases to different extents.The proportions of visitors who were satisfied with the services of public facilities (94.4%), gaming establishments (87.6%) and public transport (85.7%) went down by 1.0 percentage point, 3.4 percentage points and 3.2 percentage points quarter-to-quarterrespectively. Moreover, the proportion of visitors who considered that there were adequate points of tourist attractions in Macao (70.2%) showed a drop of 3.8 percentage points quarter-to-quarter.
