Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population of Macao was 686,400 at the end of the first quarter of 2024, up by 2,700 quarter-on-quarter; the increase was mainly due to a rise in the number of non-resident workers living in Macao. As regards the gender distribution, the female population (366,200) exceeded the male population (320,200), accounting for 53.4% of the total.
A total of 856 live births were delivered in the first quarter, a decrease of 105 quarter-on-quarter. There were 452 male babies and 404 female babies, and the sex ratio at birth was 111.9 (i.e. 111.9 male babies per 100 female babies).
Mortality increased by 37 quarter-on-quarter to 631 in the first quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (232), Diseases of the Circulatory System (159) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (110).
With respect to the population movement, new arrivals from mainland China with one-way permit (726) went down by 251 quarter-on-quarter in the first quarter, while the number of individuals newly granted right of abode (272) grew by 54. Meanwhile, number of non-resident workers at end-period (179,469) went up by 2,808.
A total of 937 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the first quarter, up by 96 quarter-on-quarter.
