Results of the Wholesale and Retail Survey for 2004


Information from Statistics and Census Service indicated that there were 10,468 wholesale and retail outlets, including establishments, market stalls and fixed stalls on the street operating in 2004, an increase of 406 outlets compared with 2003; number of persons engaged totalled 29,694, up 10%. Total receipts and total expenditure amounted to MOP19.68 billion and MOP18.44 billion respectively, which increased by 17% and 18% compared with 2003. Gross value added and gross fixed capital formation were MOP2.94 billion and MOP277 million, up by 17% and 20% over 2003. There were 8,324 wholesale and retail establishments operating in 2004, an increase of 461 establishments compared with 2003, of which 643 establishments were in the sale of motor vehicles & automobile fuel, 2,848 establishments were in wholesale trade and 4,833 establishments were in retail trade. Number of persons engaged totalled 26,052, up by 12% over 2003. Sales and other receipts of the wholesale and retail establishments amounted to MOP18.80 billion, up by 18% compared with 2003. Analyzed by industry, receipts of wholesale trade reached MOP10.04 billion (53.4% of total), while retail trade accounted for MOP6.67 billion (35.4%). Furthermore, total expenditure of the wholesale and retail establishments increased by 19% over 2003 to MOP17.71 billion. Among the expenditure items, purchase of goods and commission paid amounted to MOP14.58 billion; operating expenses and compensation of employees were MOP1.86 billion and MOP1.27 billion respectively. Gross value added of the wholesale and retail establishments was MOP2.78 billion, an increase of 17% compared with 2003; gross fixed capital formation rose by 20% over 2003 to MOP277 million. Besides, number of operating market and street stalls decreased by 55 over 2003 to 2,144 stalls, among which 811 were market stalls and 1,333 were fixed stalls on the street. There were 3,642 persons engaged, down 3%. Receipts and expenditure amounted to MOP875 million and MOP738 million respectively, which increased slightly by 2% and 1% compared with 2003.
