Results of the Package Tours and Hotel Occupancy Rate for October 2006


Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that visitor arrivals in package tours totalled 216,032 in October 2006, a marginal increase of 0.2% year-on-year. Among them, visitors from Mainland China (154,684) and Taiwan, China (17,658) dropped 8.3% and 18.9% respectively, while visitors from Hong Kong (10,963) rose 16.4% over October 2005. In the first ten months of 2006, visitor arrivals in package tours grew 7.8% over the same period of 2005 to 2,312,987. Number of Macao residents travelled in package tours in October was 19,599, a year-on-year decrease of 15.1%. Mainland China; Thailand; and Taiwan, China were the three more popular tour itineraries, which accounted for 78.8%, 5.0% and 4.9% of the total respectively. In the first ten months of 2006, Macao residents travelled in package tours logged 223,581, which decreased by 9.9% compared with the same period of 2005. Meanwhile, 26,949 Macao residents travelled under own arrangements using services provided by travel agencies, a decrease of 2.0% year-on-year. Mainland China (36.4%), Hong Kong (27.9%) and Taiwan, China (15.9%) were the major destinations. In the first ten months of 2006, Macao residents travelled under such arrangements increased 13.9% to 302,154 over the corresponding period of 2005. At the end of October 2006, number of guest rooms available in the hotel industry registered an increase of 1,784 rooms (+16.8%) over October 2005 to 12,419 rooms. In addition, a total of 412,448 guests checked into hotels and similar establishments in October, a year-on-year growth of 17.3%. The average hotel occupancy rate was 73.6%, representing a decrease of 1.8 percentage points over October 2005, with 4-star hotels leading at 80.2%. The average length of stay of hotel guests showed a decrease of 0.06 night to 1.19 nights. The majority of the guests came from Mainland China (52.7%), Hong Kong (28.2%) and Taiwan, China (2.9%). In the first ten months of 2006, the number of hotel guests increased 12.2% over the same period of 2005 to 3,755,609. In the first ten months of 2006, hotel guests (excluding Macao residents) accounted for 41.0% of the total number of tourists, which was lower than the 42.8% recorded in the same period of 2005.
