Macao should seize opportunity in the rise of central region, says CE

The Chief Executive, Mr Edmund Ho Hau Wah, today called on Macao to seize the opportunities created by the emergence of the central region of China. Speaking at a forum titled ''Business Going West'' in the Expo Central China 2006 in Changsha, Hunan, Mr Ho said: ''Promoting the 'Rise of the Central Region' is yet another important national policy proposed by the Central Government, following the opening up of the Coastal Region, the exploration of the Western Region, and the revitalisation plan of the Northeast Region.'' He said this would further drive forward the nation towards comprehensive development and national rejuvenation, and thus Macao SAR would actively seize this opportunity and play its role in the development of the central region. Meanwhile, he reiterated Macao's advantages as a regional service platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, and invited the cities in the central region to engage in economic and trade exchanges with the Portuguese-speaking countries by using Macao as a platform. Expo Central China 2006 was jointly hosted by a number of departments of the State Council, trade-promotion institutes and the provincial governments of six provinces in the central region of China, namely Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan. It was attended by the Vice Premier, Ms Wu Yi, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, ministers from a number of departments of the State Council, officials from the six provinces in the central region of China, namely Shaanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan, as well as delegations from seven Portuguese-speaking countries.
