Results of the Employment Survey for February – April 2006


According to the results of the Employment Survey released by the Statistics and Census Service, unemployment rate for February - April 2006 was held stable at 3.9%, same as that for January - March 2006, and decreased by 0.2 percentage point over the same period of 2005. The underemployment rate was up by 0.2 percentage point over January - March 2006 to 1.2%, but remained at the same level as recorded in the same period of 2005. Number of the unemployed searching for their first job was about 700, representing 6.7% of the total unemployed population, down by 0.4 percentage point over January - March 2006. Compared with January - March 2006, the unemployment situation was improved in Transport, storage & communications sector; Recreational, cultural, gaming & other service activities; and Wholesale & retail trade, while it was less favourable in Real estate, renting & business activities and the Manufacturing sector. Total labour force was estimated at 267,700 in February - April 2006; the employed and the unemployed populations were 257,300 and 10,400 respectively. Labour force participation rate was 64.6%, down slightly by 0.1 percentage point over January - March 2006, but up by 2.2 percentage points over the same period of 2005.
