“Canton and Nagasaki Compared, 1730-1830”Academic Conference

The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao S.A.R. Government, Sun Yat-sen University, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Guangzhou and Guangzhou Museum, will co-organize an academic conference on the above topic at the Institute for Tourism Studies of Macao on Dec 6-7, The conference will be given in Mandarin and English with simultaneous interpretation. Entrance is free. Macao has played an important role as a centre of East-West trade since it was first settled in the 16th century. The city served as a base for several different nations trading between Europe and Guangdong, Japan, the Philippines and other areas in Southeast Asia. Thanks to this rich past of international encounter, Macao flourished in a unique way, coming to a peak in the 18th and early 19th centuries. “Canton and Nagasaki Compared, 1730-1830”, seeks to analyse and compare the Dutch, Chinese and Japanese trading triangle and the roles of the port cities of Guangzhou, Macao and Nagasaki. Guest speakers will cover the impact of the great transformations that occurred in East Asia in the late 18th century and early 19th century as a result of changes in global trade and power relations, in a rich selection of papers, including: “A brief discussion on Pidgin Portuguese in Canton”
