Results of the Employment Survey for November 2006 – January 2007


According to the results of the Employment Survey released by the Statistics and Census Service, the unemployment rate for November 2006 - January 2007 was 3.4%, which fell by 0.1 percentage point over October - December 2006 and 0.5 percentage point over November 2005 - January 2006. The underemployment rate was held stable at 0.8%, same as that recorded in October - December 2006, but down by 0.3 percentage point year-on-year. About 900 unemployed persons were searching for their first job, representing 9.2% of the total unemployed population, a decline of 1.5 percentage points over the preceding period. Compared with October - December 2006, the unemployment situation was improved in Transport, storage & communications; Wholesale & retail trade; and Real estate, renting & business activities, while the situation in other sectors remained stable. Total labour force was estimated at 291,000 in November 2006 - January 2007, of which 281,000 were employed and 10,000 unemployed. Labour force participation rate was 66.8%, up by 0.4 percentage point over the preceding period and 2.6 percentage points year-on-year.
