Macao and Guangdong today signed an agreement relating to the construction of the University of Macau campus on Hengqin Island, following the recent approval by the National People’s Congress. According to the agreement, both Macao and Guangdong would provide the necessary support to facilitate construction. They would steer the project under the frameworks of the Outline of the Plan for the Reform and Development of the Pearl River Delta (2008-2020) and a master development plan of Hengqin Island approved by the State Council last month. The agreement was signed after the annual Guangdong-Macao Co-operation Joint Conference, which was presided over by the Chief Executive, Mr Edmund Ho Hau Wah, and the Governor of Guangdong, Mr Huang Huahua. During the conference, Mr Ho thanked Guangdong for supporting the project of University of Macau campus on Hengqin, Macao’s enterprises in Guangdong and Macao’s drive in diversifying its economy. And Mr Huang said Macao and Guangdong should make good use of the policies adopted by the Central Government and enhance co-operation and integration. Officials from Macao and Guangdong also exchanged ideas on large-scale infrastructure, trade and economy, education, electricity and water supply, food safety and traditional Chinese medicine at the conference.
