Demographic Statistics for the First Quarter of 2011


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the population of Macao was estimated at 556,800 as at 31 March 2011, an increase of 4,500 (+0.8%) from end-2010. In the first quarter of 2011, there were 1,274 live births, down by 10.3% quarter-to-quarter. Gender ratio of the newborn was 108.5, with 663 male babies. Number of mortality cases totalled 509, up by 16.2% quarter-to-quarter; major underlying causes of death were Diseases of the Circulatory System and Neoplasms. Meanwhile, 2 cases of fetal mortality were recorded. There were 2,004 cases of Notifiable diseases reported in this quarter, consisting mainly of Influenza (1,119 cases), H1N1 (Swine Influenza ) (238 cases) and Acute Norovirus gastroenteropathy (156 cases). In addition, 873 cases of marriage registration were recorded, up by 7.5% over the fourth quarter of 2010. In the first quarter of 2011, there were 2,081 Chinese immigrants with One-way Exit Permit moving to Macao, a decrease of 1,365 quarter-to-quarter; meanwhile, 292 illegal immigrants were repatriated. Moreover, a total of 704 individuals were authorized to reside in Macao, down slightly by 19 quarter-to-quarter. Total number of non-resident workers stood at 81,416 at the end of the first quarter, up by 5,603 quarter-to-quarter.
