CE issues statement to Macao public on Typhoon Hato measures

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, affirmed that the Government was sparing no effort regarding relief measures in response to the challenges created by Typhoon Hato.

Delivering a message in the late evening at the Civil Protection Action Centre, Mr Chui, on behalf of the Government, expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those people that died during the event and conveyed his profound sympathy for all people affected by the typhoon.

Mr Chui pledged the Government’s assistance to some 150 people injured as a result of the typhoon striking Macao.

Typhoon Hato was the strongest recorded storm in Macao for 53 years, and had a severe impact across the city. The Government had taken a number of measures in response to the emergency, it was disclosed during Wednesday evening’s press conference held jointly by the Office of the Government Spokesperson and the Civil Protection Action Centre in concert with a number of public departments.

The Government is dedicating continued effort regarding coordinating the restoration of water and electricity supplies, in order to ensure the Macao public can resume their normal lives as quickly as possible, said the statement.

Currently, a number of public departments – including the Civil Protection Action Centre, the Social Welfare Bureau, the Health Bureau, the Industrial and Commercial Development Fund, the police services, the fire services, and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau – have put in place measures and actions to alleviate the effects of the typhoon.

The Government would learn from the experience of dealing with the typhoon and would review its existing mechanisms – including the route for releasing meteorological information – as to optimise further the Government work regarding either the prevention, or where necessary, the mitigation of disasters.
