As of 11am of 24 August, the Civil Protection Action Centre had recorded a total of 405 incidents across Macao and the Islands (Taipa and Coloane) as a result of Typhoon Hato. The incidents included:
- 26 relating to destruction of buildings, collapse of concrete walls from buildings, or objects falling from height;
- 80 involving falling or swinging advertising signs, canopies, ironwork or windows;
- 9 relating to swinging or collapsed scaffolding;
- 90 concerning collapse of wiring poles or trees.
The Centre has been employing every effort to carry out rescue work and clear obstacles from roads. Currently, for the safety of the public, limited traffic flow systems are being implemented on many local roads due to obstacles that still require removal. The Centre urges drivers to pay extra attention to special signage and any instructions from police officers present at roadsides, as in some areas traffic lights are not yet functioning normally.
The Centre is also dedicating its efforts to working on the restoration of water and electricity supplies as well as the mobile communications network, in order to ensure the Macao public can resume their normal lives as quickly as possible.
The Centre urges people to pay close attention to their surroundings when outdoors. Members of the public are advised not to drive or to leave their homes or places of work – unless absolutely necessary – in order to maintain traffic flow on the roads and to prevent the risk of accident.
