Government thanks general public, civil service for their concerted efforts in post-typhoon clean up and recovery

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, issued a statement today expressing his heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the Government to all Macao residents for their concerted efforts in helping those affected by Typhoon Hato and in cleaning up from the streets the waste and debris resulting from the typhoon.

On 23 August, Macao was battered by Typhoon Hato, which prompted the No. 10 storm signal in the city. The typhoon led to 10 fatalities and heavy financial losses.

Faced with this calamity, the people of Macao rose to the challenge and stood as one, each doing his or her part in contributing to the post-typhoon rescue and recovery efforts, reads the Chief Executive’s statement.

The Macao SAR Government (MSAR), with the help of the Central Government, did its utmost to restore normality on the streets of Macao after the disruption wrought by Typhoon Hato.

The MSAR Government is especially moved by the generosity of those volunteers who helped clean up the streets and delivered food and water to families that were affected by the disruption of water and electricity supply. The Government is proud of these selfless volunteers.

The Government is also thankful for the public’s understanding and support in the rescue and recovery efforts.

The Government acknowledges that its work needs to be fully reviewed regarding the opportunity for improvement and pledges to draw experience from Typhoon Hato in enhancing the weather reporting system, disaster warning procedures, and safety awareness and civil protection measures.

The Government also thanks the civil service, especially front-line personnel of the Public Security Police Force, Civic and Municipal Affair Bureau, Social Affairs Bureau, Housing Bureau and Health Bureau, for their contribution to the post-typhoon rescue and recovery efforts.

The civil service is urged to keep up its efforts and brace itself for new challenges as many local facilities are yet to be repaired and the storm season is not yet over.

The Government is sparing no effort in cleaning up the streets to prevent the spread of diseases and hopes that all civil servants can continue to volunteer to help front-line personnel in restoring normality in Macao.
