The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released results of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the third quarter of 2015. Survey coverage for this quarter comprises Manufacturing; Hotels; Restaurants; Insurance; Financial Intermediation Activities; Electricity, Gas & Water Supply; Child-care and Elderly Care. This survey excludes the self-employed, as well as insurance agents and brokers not directly employed by insurance companies. With new gaming and tourism facilities commencing operations, full-time employees in Hotels (50,132) and Restaurants (27,709) at the end of the third quarter increased by 10.0% and 16.3% respectively year-on-year. In September, average earnings (excluding bonuses and allowances) of full-time employees in the respective industries rose by 4.5% and 3.8% to MOP16,460 and MOP9,200. Manufacturing and Electricity, Gas & Water Supply had 9,229 and 1,076 full-time employees respectively, similar to a year earlier; average earnings in September rose by 1.3% and 4.4% year-on-year to MOP9,780 and MOP29,020. Insurance had 506 full-time employees, up by 6.8% year-on-year; average earnings in September rose by 5.7% to MOP24,400. Financial Intermediation Activities had 389 full-time employees, similar to a year earlier, with the average earnings rising by 8.1% to MOP14,180. Child-care and Elderly Care had 1,151 and 662 full-time employees, up by 18.2% and 5.9% year-on-year; average earnings in September increased by 7.1% and 8.0% respectively to MOP12,640 and MOP12,320. At the end of the third quarter, job vacancies in Hotels (1,624), Restaurants (2,192) and Manufacturing (1,021) registered year-on-year decrease. About 75.7% of the vacancies in Manufacturing and 72.6% of those in Restaurants merely required junior secondary education or lower. All of the vacancies in Financial Intermediation Activities required knowledge of Mandarin and English, while the respective rates for Hotels were 80.0% and 47.2%. In the third quarter, the job vacancy rate (3.1%) and the employee turnover rate (5.2%) in Hotels fell by 2.5 and 0.1 percentage point respectively year-on-year, while the employee recruitment rate (8.3%) rose by 1.4 percentage points, indicating that some of the vacancies had already been filled. In Restaurants, the job vacancy rate (7.3%) and the employee turnover rate (6.6%) decreased by 4.3 and 1.1 percentage points respectively year-on-year, implying a slight improvement in employee turnover. With the opening of new hotels, number of participants receiving vocational training showed a sharp increase. In the third quarter, a total of 95,716 employee participants from the surveyed industries attended training courses provided by the establishment (including courses organized by the establishment or in conjunction with other institutions, and those sponsored by the employer), up substantially by 330.0% year-on-year. Hotels had 92,451 participants in vocational training, with the majority attending courses in Services (68.1%) and Business & Administration (18.3%); besides, 99.8% of the participants attended courses during office hours. Over 70% of the participants from most of the industries attended courses paid by the establishment, while the corresponding rate in Manufacturing and Child-care was 51.1% and 26.4% respectively.
