Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise import for December 2015 decreased by 22.4% year-on-year to MOP6.98 billion, representing the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year decline. Meanwhile, total merchandise export dropped by 8.8% year-on-year to MOP898 million, of which value of re-exports (MOP720 million) and domestic exports (MOP177 million) declined by 7.7% and 13.1% respectively. Merchandise trade deficit amounted to MOP6.08 billion. In the fourth quarter of 2015, total value of merchandise export (MOP2.53 billion) and merchandise import (MOP21.15 billion) fell by 3.9% and 15.7% respectively year-on-year, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP18.62 billion. For the whole year of 2015, total value of merchandise export grew by 7.8% year-on-year to MOP10.69 billion, of which value of re-exports (MOP8.87 billion) increased by 12.4%, but that of domestic exports (MOP1.82 billion) decreased by 10.0%. Owing to the decline in demand for consumer goods, such as Gold jewellery (-31.2%), Motor cars (-25.4%) and Watches (-21.5%), total value of merchandise import fell by 5.9% year-on-year to MOP84.66 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP73.97 billion in 2015. Analysed by destination, merchandise export to Hong Kong (MOP6.33 billion) and Mainland China (MOP1.84 billion) increased by 8.8% and 18.2% year-on-year in 2015, while export to the EU (MOP226 million) and the USA (MOP197 million) decreased by 27.0% and 33.0% respectively. Exports of Non-textiles increased by 8.0% year-on-year to MOP9.86 billion, of which value of Clocks & watches (MOP1.23 billion) and Electronic components (MOP979 million) rose by 40.9% and 48.7% respectively, but that of Machines, apparatus & parts (MOP1.16 billion) dropped by 36.9%. Exports of Textiles & garments totalled MOP831 million, up by 6.4%. By place of origin, merchandise import from Mainland China (MOP31.85 billion) increased by 6.8% year-on-year in 2015, while import from the EU (MOP18.84 billion) fell by 13.8%. Imports of Consumer goods dropped by 9.7% to MOP50.56 billion, with imports of Gold jewellery (MOP7.04 billion) decreasing by 31.2%, but that of Food & beverages (MOP11.98 billion) increasing by 2.7%. Moreover, imports of Fuels & lubricants (MOP6.90 billion) and Construction materials (MOP3.15 billion) declined by 13.7% and 9.1% respectively. External merchandise trade reached MOP95.36 billion in 2015, down by 4.5% compared with MOP99.87 billion in 2014.
