UM scholar receives international young scholar award

Mario Cams receives the 2017 DHST Prize for Young Scholars

Mario Cams, an assistant professor from the Department of History, Faculty of Social Science (FSS), University of Macau (UM), recently received the 2017 DHST Prize for Young Scholars from the Division of History of Science and Technology (DHST), International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IUHPST), for his outstanding academic performance and research in the history of science.

Dr Cams received the award for his new book Companions in Geography: East-West Collaboration in the Mapping of Qing China (c. 1685-1735), which was recently published by Brill Academic Publishers as part of the East and West: Culture, Diplomacy and Interactions series. The book discusses the collaboration between Qing officials and French missionaries during an enormous project to map the territories of China during the Qing dynasty in the early 18th century.

Dr Cams’s research projects focus on early modern exchanges of cartographic knowledge and techniques between Europe and East Asia. The award presentation ceremony took place at the 25th International Congress of History of Science and Technology held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The prize is given every four years to young historians of science and technology for their outstanding works.
