IC announces candidates to the second review for the 2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films

The initial review of the “2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films” was completed and a total of 12 entrants were selected for the second review.

The initial review of the “2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films”, organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym) was completed and a total of 12 entrants were selected to the second review. The final beneficiaries will be granted each a subsidy of up to MOP240,000 for the production, promotion and marketing of the animation short films.

The “2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films” aims to spur the development of Macao’s animation industry, nurture local talents in animation creation, production and planning, enhance their creativity in planning and storytelling techniques and encourage the production of original animations by the sector, as well as promote local animation development through participation in exhibitions, public screenings and online promotion. A total of 22 applications were received, with one application being disqualified for failure to meet the necessary requirements. Following the initial review, the adjudicating panel selected a list of eligible candidates for the second review: (in arbitrary order) Mok Siec Kong, Fong Mei Han, Lei Pui Weng, Ku Pou Cheng, Wong Kei Seak, Sam Kin Hang, Lai Meng Tak, Pun Lap Fung, Lou Ka Choi, Cheang Ka Wo, Kuan Wai Lei and Cheong Chi Pan.

Eligible applicants for the second review will receive a subsidy to produce the animatic of a storyboard based on their proposal in the initial review, and present it to the adjudication panel, followed by a final interview. The adjudicating panel will select a maximum of five final beneficiaries based on criteria including creativity of the story and expression techniques, character design and potentiality, feasibility of production plan, promotion and marketing plan, budget rationale as well as the applicant and film crew’s implementing capacity. Each final beneficiary will receive a subsidy of up to MOP240,000 to initiate the production, promotion and marketing of their animation short films. Beneficiaries will also be provided with professional advices by veteran animation producers.

The adjudicating panel of the “2016 Subsidy Programme for the Production of Original Animation Short Films” includes: China animation director and scriptwriter, Fu Yan; Hong Kong animation director and scriptwriter, Yuen Kin To; Hong Kong animation director and comics artist, Ip Wai Ching; Hong Kong animation director and professor, Lo Che Ying; Taiwan animation director and professor, Chang Wei Chung.
