Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) attended the “Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) High Level Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Tourism” in Vietnam. The Office hoped to exchange information about diversification and sustainable development of the tourism industry, as well as to raise Macao’s visibility and participation in international tourism associations through this attendance.
MGTO Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong attended the APEC High Level Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Tourism, which was held in Ha Long city, Vietnam today (19 June). Vietnam officials and representatives from international tourism organizations delivered remarks in the opening session. During the meeting, representatives from various member economies and international tourism organizations have exchanged views and held in-depth discussions on a series of topics. A Statement of the APEC High Level Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Tourism Development has been adopted and consensus on a number of issues has been reached throughout the meeting.
Representatives from 18 APEC member economies have attended the meeting, in addition to representatives from World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Since Macao, China is an APEC guest economy, MGTO has been participating in the meetings and activities of APEC’s Tourism Working Group. Deputy Director Cheng Wai Tong expressed that MGTO has been undergoing different aspects of work to ensure the diversification and sustainable development of Macao’s tourism industry. Through attending the High Level Policy Dialogue, MGTO hopes to learn from the invaluable experience from different destinations and at the same time share with them the work done on promoting sustainable tourism development in Macao. The Office also hopes to raise Macao’s visibility and participation in international tourism associations through taking part in the related activities and events.
MGTO has been actively taking part in different meetings and events hosted by international tourism organizations, while attracting organizers to choose Macao as the destination for large-scale international tourism conventions and exhibitions. This year, the PATA Travel Mart 2017 and the 43rd National Congress of the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT) will be held in Macao in September and November respectively.
