Macao-China Pavilion at the “International Art Exhibition – La Biennale Di Venezia” opens on Thursday

The artworks are assembled for the debut of the exhibition

The “International Art Exhibition - La Biennale Di Venezia”, long acclaimed as the “Arts Olympus”, will hold its 57th edition this month. This year, Macao participates in the Biennale with the exhibition “A Bonsai of My Dream – Works by Wong Cheng Pou” which will be inaugurated on Thursday, 11 May, at 5:30pm, (local time in Italy), in Venice.

The Macao Museum of Art(MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, is responsible for this year’s exhibition. After a thorough selection process, renowned local artist Wong Cheng Pou was unanimously selected as Macao’s representative at the Biennale. The Macao exhibition, entitled “A Bonsai of My Dream”, features a total of 17 artworks (paintings and sculptures), presenting the author’s microscopic and macroscopic perspective of the city life.

The Macao Pavilion is located, as in the last edition, opposite to the main venue of the Biennale, the Arsenale, and is expected to receive a large number of visitors this year due to its prominent location. The curator of the exhibition, Ng Fong Chao, the artist and the exhibition team arrived in Venice a few days ago and have been working in close cooperation for the set up of the artworks and the venue decoration, in order to achieve the best results.

Established in 1895, the “International Art Exhibition - La Biennale Di Venezia” is one of the most important contemporary art events. Each edition attracts artists of great potential and international profile from nearly a hundred countries and regions. Macao was first invited to participate in the Biennale in 2007, with a total of six exhibitions by 15 local artists shown at the Macau-China Pavilion since. With their unique perspectives, these artists have shown the characteristics of Macao through diverse artistic languages. Their artworks not only represent the contemporary art scene of Macao but also provide international visitors a channel to understand Macao and its artistic situation.

The Macao exhibition “ABonsai of My Dream – Works by Wong Cheng Pou” will be open from 13 May to 12 November, and is open from 10am to 6pm (closed on Mondays). The exhibition is located at Arsenale, Campo della Tana. Castello 2126/A, Venice, Italy. For more information, please visit www.MAM.gov.mo.
