To promote the development of local cultural and creative industries and to enrich citizens’ cultural life, the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) hosts“More Than Just Text” Exhibition of Book Layout & Design Works by Joaquim Cheong and his Students at the Team Building of IFT from 31 March to 30 June 2017. During the exhibition, multiple poster and layout designs by the teacher and the students are displayed. The public is cordially invited to appreciate how the teacher and the students transform the design element of “texts” into infinite possibilities.

In order to nurture local design talents and to promote the development of cultural and creative industries, IFT launched the “Books and Layout Design” course and “Poster Designer Creation Series - Typography Poster Design” course in 2012, inviting the experienced Macao designer Mr. Joaquim Cheong to be the instructor. Every time during his class, Mr. Cheong says to his students, “Words are not words, but convertible images; books are not books, but spaces for communication among people.” He inspires students not to be bound by the innate form of words and to tap into their creativity to transform the words into a myriad of images to be reasonably displayed in media like books and posters. IFT also hopes to bring some new ideas about words to the audience through this exhibition.

In this exhibition, 56 pieces of works designed by instructor Joaquim Cheong and his students are displayed. The works flexibly applied the design theories and concepts taught in the courses, while using dots, lines, planes, texts and shapes in graphic design and adopting the techniques of size, weight, rhythm, contrast, balance and gradation to demonstrate the visual effects of layout and poster design, thereby fully displaying the creative thinking of the students.

IFT has always been committed to promoting the cultural industry in Macao. Apart from constantly providing a variety of cultural and creative courses, IFT has also pursued active cooperation with artists and designers in recent years, organising various types of exhibitions, in an effort to promote local creation and to provide a platform for local artists and designers to demonstrate their achievements of arts, and to integrate arts into the daily life of residents.

IFT has continuously explored courses which are up-to-date, interesting and practical for the community. Currently, IFT’s Tourism and Hotel School is working with 20 international organisations, providing over 80 professional and certified courses and assessments to the public and industry professionals. Every year, the School provides hundreds of vocational and professional courses to a total of around 20,000 participants.
