The Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election is to distribute – via various media and other channels – information on the upcoming election, with the aim of encouraging voters to exercise their voting rights and duties.
The Commission’s promotion efforts for the 2017 Legislative Assembly Election – an event to be held on 17 September – will include: encouraging voting on election day; giving more information on voting procedures; explaining matters regarding the process of voting; and how to avoid during voting, behaviour that could be deemed unlawful.
The information will be available in videos and pamphlets across different channels, including the Internet, the Chairman of the Commission, Mr Tong Hio Fong, told the media in a briefing following today’s Commission meeting.
He said the Commission would hold sessions in mid- or late-April to offer interested persons and organisations a better understanding of the election process.
Today’s meeting also discussed the formulation of guidelines for the upcoming election. There was a need to update the election guidelines following an update to the Legislative Assembly Election Law, said Mr Tong. The Commission is currently preparing the new guidelines – using as a reference point the guidelines for the previous Legislative Assembly Election – and would announce their content in due course.
In addition, it was stated that the Commission had – as of this morning – received one enquiry in relation to the election.
The briefing outlined that the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election and the Commission Against Corruption jointly operate a telephone hotline and an online communication system for the public. It has been operating since 18 March, in order to handle any complaints relating to election matters.
