Consumer Council conducted a survey on the fibre broadband services provided by the two local internet service providers, the survey and the suggestions of the Council have been uploaded on the Council’s website.

According to the survey result, there are total 9 and 5 different monthly plans offered by the two internet service providers respectively. The monthly plans vary according to the upload and download speed, all plans include unlimited usage of time, and a price difference of about three to nice percent are recorded when comparing plans with the same upload and download speed. Meanwhile, different monthly plans offer a variety of free add-on services, such as free e-mail box usage.

The Council states that consumers do not usually change their internet service providers within a short period of time, consumers should choose a plan that suits their needs to avoid extra spending. Consumers should also compare the service terms and quality of the two internet service providers, especially key items, such as checking fees. According to the survey result, one of the internet service providers waive its first time checking fee (non-office hours) but charge consumers for $100 (office hours) or $200 (non-office hours) as checking fee. The other internet service provider offers free checking, and does not need monthly payments paid in advance as the deposit, however, a cancellation fee will be charged if consumers choose to cancel their contract in advance. Consumers are advised to inquire and compare more about the above service terms and conditions, and to read thoroughly the contract terms in advance, including the period of the contract, restrictions, etc.. Consumers should ask for advice from relatives and friends who are users of fibre broadband service, and avoid making hasty decision when internet service providers are offering promotions.
