The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, tours the polling site at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion, to gain better insight of election arrangements.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today said the Government had dedicated maximum effort in order to ensure the elections on Sunday (17 September) would be held in a lawful, fair and clean manner.

Mr Chui made his remarks during a visit this morning to polling sites at, respectively, the Olympic Sports Centre in Taipa and the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion on Macao peninsula. The site visits were in order to gain a better understanding of the preparations for the elections.

He said he believed the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election was well equipped to fulfil its responsibilities, and to work closely with relevant public departments, in order to ensure the election process went smoothly.

The Commission Chairman, Mr Tong Hio Fong, also attended the site visit, giving details regarding the Commission’s work since its establishment in January, including its management of electoral affairs, its promotion of the elections, and its role in issuing clarifications on topics when necessary and in the light of public opinion. Mr Tong also outlined the Commission’s close cooperation with the Commission Against Corruption, including the arrangement of information sessions to explain to candidates and the voting public respectively, the electoral system and election procedures.

Mr Tong also explained the reason for the design of the voting booths, covered as they are from top to bottom with translucent curtains, in order to ensure the ballot choice of each voter could be kept confidential.

The Secretary for Administration and Justice, Ms Chan Hoi Fan, and members of the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Legislative Assembly Election also accompanied Mr Chui on the site visits.
