The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) released the results of Industrial Survey for 2016. Total Receipts of the industrial establishments in Macao dropped slightly by 0.9% year-on-year to MOP10.41 billion in 2016, and Intermediate Consumption decreased by 7.4% to MOP5.53 billion. As the decline in consumption outpaced the drop in receipts, Gross Surplus of the industrial sector (MOP2.82 billion) grew by 8.9% year-on-year. Gross Value Added that measures the sectorial contribution to the economy (MOP4.88 billion) also registered an increase of 7.6%. A total of 883 establishments were operating in industrial production, a year-on-year decrease of 17; total number of persons engaged went up by 1.2% to 12,062.
Attributable to a decrease in sales volume of cement and concrete, Receipts of the Manufacturing sector dropped by 3.7% year-on-year to MOP6.88 billion, with its share in Total Receipts of the industrial sector falling by 1.9 percentage points to 66.1%. Intermediate Consumption of the manufacturing sector dropped by 8.1% year-on-year to MOP4.58 billion, whereas Gross Surplus (MOP890 million) and Gross Value Added (MOP2.31 billion) increased by 10.4% and 6.5% respectively. Total number of manufacturing establishments decreased by 17 year-on-year to 877, in which publishing & printing establishments dropped by 13 and those in manufacture of textile and wearing apparel reduced by 14. Number of persons engaged totalled 10,940, up by 1.0% year-on-year.
Within the manufacturing sector, Receipts of Manufacture of Food Products & Beverages grew by 8.4% year-on-year to MOP1.89 billion, Intermediate Consumption rose by 5.9% to MOP1.11 billion, Gross Surplus (MOP230 million) and Gross Value Added (MOP770 million) went up by 34.0% and 12.2% respectively. On the other hand, due to the declining demand for cement and similar products in local construction projects, Receipts of Manufacture of Cement & Concrete decreased further by 21.0% year-on-year to MOP1.61 billion, along with a 21.1% drop in Intermediate Consumption (MOP1.20 billion); consequently, Gross Surplus (MOP310 million) and Gross Valued Added (MOP400 million) went down by 23.2% and 20.5% respectively.
In spite of a 4.7% growth in Receipts of Publishing & Printing (MOP800 million), Intermediate Consumption (MOP510 million) increased by 12.5% year-on-year due to higher production costs for processing services, thus bringing Gross Surplus (MOP30.60 million) and Gross Valued Added (MOP290 million) down by 23.0% and 7.0% respectively. Among the emerging industries, Manufacture of Chinese Medicine showed continued growth, with Receipts rising notably by 65.7% year-on-year to MOP48.70 million, representing the third consecutive year of increase.
As regards the Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector, increased electricity consumption drove Receipts up by 4.9% year-on-year to MOP3.53 billion, whereas Intermediate Consumption decreased by 3.7% to MOP950 million due to lower prices of fuel used in electricity generation. Hence, Gross Valued Added (MOP2.58 billion) and Gross Surplus (MOP1.93 billion) of the sector grew by 8.6% and 8.2% respectively year-on-year. Number of establishments in the Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sector remained at 6; number of persons engaged increased by 3.5% year-on-year to 1,122.
The Industrial Survey covers the Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing and Electricity, Gas & Water Supply sectors. In 2016, there was no active establishment in the Mining & Quarrying sector.
