Provision of free circulation coin exchange service to the public

In order to respond proactively to public views and to facilitate the circulation of currency coins, the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) will launch free coin exchange service (including the exchange of coins for banknotes and vice versa) to the public via the two Note-Issuing Banks – Bank of China Limited (BOC) and Banco Nacional Ultramarino, S.A. (BNU). This service will commence on 25th September, 2017 at the branches of the two Note-Issuing Banks (Please refer to the attachment for the address and telephone number of the Banks’ branches).

For the exchange of coins into banknotes, only the current circulation coin series will be accepted. To conduct the exchange, the public should use the current cash service offered at the two Note-Issuing Banks. The coins to be exchanged should be classified by denomination beforehand. Upon the confirmation of the counted amount of coins, service users can opt to receive the counted sum in cash or have the sum deposited in their account at the Bank providing the exchange service. If disagreement arises over the counted sum, the service user concerned may cancel the transaction and retrieve the coins.

On the other hand, since the service of exchanging notes into coins will depend on the supply of circulation coins, the public should adhere to Banks’ current by - appointment mode of arrangement and contact in advance the respective branch of the two Issuing Banks to inquire about supply of coins, or call Tel: 8889 5566 (BOC) / 2833 5533 (BNU) for more details.

The trial period for the free coin exchange service will last for 6 months, after which AMCM will review and assess the effectiveness of the service. Then based on the conclusions of the review, AMCM will revise as appropriate the contents of the coin exchange service, and will also consider adopting other optimization measures.
