The University of Macau (UM) kicked off its first Innovation Week, in the UM Guest House today (1 November). Organised by UM’s Centre for Innovation, the event attracted prominent members of the community, industry representatives, experts, scholars, faculty members, students, and members of the general public. During the event, participants learned about the university’s latest developments in scientific research, commercialisation of research results, as well as knowledge and technological innovation. At the same event, UM signed memoranda of understanding with Zhuhai Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, and Newland, on the establishment of a parallel incubation centre and a joint laboratory for the development of smart cities, respectively. The documents aim to help Macao shift its economic focus from traditional industries to modern emerging industries and promote the development of the city’s creative industry.
In his speech, Rector Wei Zhao said that today, many countries have established innovation centres and have incorporated innovative thinking into their policy making. In view of this global trend, UM has established the Centre for Innovation, with the aim of helping Macao shift its economic focus from traditional industries to modern emerging industries, expedite its economic diversification, and nurture more well-rounded professionals with innovative thinking and leadership skills for the SAR government.
The Innovation Week includes a series of innovation and entrepreneurship talks on various topics, including big data’s economic impact, blockchains, and unmanned surface vessels. Experts on investment risk management and scholars from UM’s Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences and Faculty of Health Sciences will also share their insights with the participants. The event also includes exhibitions of research achievements and scientific projects. The exhibitions will last until 3 November. All are welcome.
