Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population was 648,500 as at end-September 2017, a slight increase of 100 quarter-to-quarter; female population (343,400) accounted for 53.0% of the total.
There were 1,690 live births delivered in the third quarter of 2017, up by 94 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 900 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 113.9, corresponding to 113.9 male babies per 100 female babies. In the first three quarters of 2017, number of live births dropped by 343 year-on-year to 4,846.
Meanwhile, mortality totalled 529, an increase of 7 quarter-to-quarter; the top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (162), Diseases of the Circulatory System (118) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (113). In the first three quarters of 2017, mortality dropped by 152 year-on-year to 1,558.
In the third quarter of 2017, Chinese immigrants (1,274) and individuals granted right of abode (387) rose by 498 and 5 respectively quarter-to-quarter. Non-resident workers totalled 176,666 at the end of the third quarter, a decrease of 2,028 over the previous quarter.
A total of 813 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the third quarter, down by 120 quarter-to-quarter. In the first three quarters of 2017, there were 2,840 cases of marriage registration, down by 72 year-on-year.
