Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending (excluding gaming expenses) of visitors was MOP15.93 billion in the third quarter of 2017, up by 8.8% year-on-year and 15.9% quarter-to-quarter. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP12.99 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP2.94 billion) rose by 9.0% and 8.2% respectively year-on-year.
In the third quarter of 2017, per-capita spending of visitors was MOP1,926, up by 6.7% year-on-year and 7.8% quarter-to-quarter. Per-capita spending of visitors from Mainland China increased by 4.6% year-on-year to MOP2,197, with spending of those from Guangdong Province (MOP1,877) and Fujian Province (MOP1,646) rising by 12.2% and 16.7% respectively. Per-capita spending of Mainland visitors travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) grew by 11.8%, at MOP2,586. Per-capita spending of visitors from Singapore (MOP2,104), Japan (MOP1,932) and Malaysia (MOP1,818) went up by 10.1%, 10.4% and 4.8% respectively year-on-year; moreover, per-capita spending of those from Australia (MOP1,646), the United States (MOP1,282) and the United Kingdom (MOP1,275) recorded increases.
Per-capita spending of overnight visitors rose by 1.9% year-on-year to MOP2,862, with spending of those from Singapore (MOP3,257) increasing by 13.5%. Per-capita spending of overnight visitors from Mainland China (MOP3,153) dropped by 3.6% year-on-year, and that of IVS visitors (MOP3,732) rose by 8.2%. Meanwhile, per-capita spending of overnight visitors from Japan (MOP3,084) and Taiwan (MOP3,020) grew by 17.6% and 0.8% respectively year-on-year. Per-capita spending of same-day visitors increased by 12.0% year-on-year to MOP788; Mainland visitors spent an average of MOP974 (+15.7%), with that of IVS visitors rising by 8.5% to MOP1,456.
With regard to type of visitor spending, visitors spent mainly on shopping (46.4%), accommodation (26.7%) and food & beverage (19.3%). Per-capita shopping spending of visitors increased by 14.2% year-on-year to MOP894, of which spending on local food products (MOP264) rose by 16.8%, and that on cosmetics & perfume (MOP232) surged by 72.7%. Analysed by main purpose of visit, per-capita spending of visitors coming to Macao for MICE events (MOP3,520) and shopping (MOP2,607) grew by 13.9% and 4.1% respectively year-on-year; spending of those coming for visiting relatives or friends (MOP2,143) expanded by 62.4%.
According to the visitors’ comments in the third quarter of 2017, 85.0% of the visitor-users were satisfied with the services of hotels, a decrease of 1.1 percentage point quarter-to-quarter, and the share of those who complimented on environmental hygiene (76.1%) and the services of retail shops (75.5%) dropped by 3.8 percentage points and 0.1 percentage point respectively. Meanwhile, the proportion of visitors who were satisfied with the services of travel agencies (73.3%) registered a notable increase of 9.6 percentage points quarter-to-quarter. A relatively low proportion of visitors were satisfied with the services of public transport (63.8%), down by 3.8 percentage points quarter-to-quarter. On the other hand, 56.1% of the visitors commented that there were adequate points of tourist attractions in Macao, up by 5.2 percentage points over the previous quarter.
