CE: Respect for opinion polls assessing Government’s work

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, speaks to reporters.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today said he respected any opinion polls assessing the Government’s work, regardless of positive or negative views being expressed via such surveys.

Speaking at a Government reception to mark the 18th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), Mr Chui said that opinion poll results could serve as a reference for the Government to improve its work, as such results could represent a call from the general public for improvements in the city’s governance.

He and his cabinet would dedicate further efforts to serve the public – according to the goals outlined in existing policy and the city’s Five-year Development Plan – during his tenure as Chief Executive, Mr Chui stated.

Mr Chui was referring to the recently published results of an opinion poll on the Government’s work. Such survey was conducted in September when Macao was recovering from the aftermath brought by Typhoon Hato – a strong storm that hit the city in August, causing 10 human fatalities and injuring approximately 240 people as well as resulting in heavy economic losses.

The Government had learnt from the experience of dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Hato, the Chief Executive said. In the 2018 Policy Address, the Government pledged to: enhance the response mechanism in case of public emergencies; advance the city’s infrastructure for disaster prevention and mitigation; strengthen the quality of governance; and improve the accountability system for senior officials.

Mr Chui told reporters that he fully understood there were differences between the outcomes of the Government’s work and the people’s expectations; adding that he constantly reminded himself that the responsibilities of a Chief Executive were to put the people first.

Mr Chui said he had received various comments and suggestions during the past 18 years that he had served the SAR population. It was important to respect all comments that aimed to contribute to a better Macao for everyone, he added.

Mr Chui reiterated that the Government paid great attention to public opinion. The Government has launched a great number of public consultations aimed to garner suggestions and opinion regarding the Government’s work and has been committed to solve issues of public concern.
