After the catastrophic typhoon Hato struck Macao on 23 August 2017, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) conducted estimation of the economic losses on housing and vehicles of households, shops, public facilities, etc. caused by the typhoon based on preliminary information available at that time. The preliminary estimates indicated that the economic losses caused by Hato to Macao amounted to MOP 11.47 billion, comprising MOP 8.31 billion of direct losses and MOP 3.16 billion of indirect losses.
Following the preliminary estimation, DSEC started to collect comprehensive information and data from various government entities on economic losses caused by Hato to their own facilities and to the institutions/enterprises under their management.
In addition, DSEC carried out further estimations on indirect economic losses in different industries, such as impact on sales of economic establishments, according to the latest data obtained from the annual survey of economic activities.
After consolidation of data from various sources, the economic losses caused by Hato to Macao were estimated at MOP 12.55 billion (MOP1.07 billion higher than the preliminary estimate), including MOP 9.05 billion of direct losses and MOP 3.50 billion of indirect losses.
