Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population at end-2017 increased by 8,200 year-on-year to 653,100, with the female population accounting for 53.0%. The elderly population (aged 65 and over) made up 10.5% of the total, up by 0.7 percentage points year-on-year; the proportion of adult population (aged 15-64) dropped by 1.0 percentage point to 76.7%. The ageing ratio rose by 4.1 percentage points year-on-year to 83.0%, indicating a continuous ageing of the population.
In 2017, a total of 6,529 live births were delivered, down by 617 year-on-year; the birth rate was 10.1‰, down by 0.9 per mille points. The sex ratio of newborns was 107.5, corresponding to 107.5 male babies per 100 female babies. Mortality decreased by 128 year-on-year to 2,120 in 2017, with 59.1% being males. Mortality from Malignant neoplasms (726) was the highest, accounting for 34.2% of the total deaths, down by 2.1 percentage points year-on-year; mortality from Pneumonia & influenza (317) and Heart diseases (199) made up 15.0% and 9.4% respectively of the total, up by 1.8 and 1.3 percentage points year-on-year.
Non-resident workers totalled 179,456 at end-2017, up by 1,818 year-on-year. Following the completion of several large-scale entertainment facilities and residential projects, number of non-resident workers in Construction dropped by 12.8% year-on-year, marking the third consecutive year of decrease. Chinese immigrants went down by 2,121 year-on-year to 4,206 in 2017, with those coming from Guangdong Province dropping by 2,010 to 2,866; females constituted 63.6% of the Chinese immigrants. Number of individuals granted right of abode increased by 80 year-on-year to 1,527. Meanwhile, 913 illegal Chinese immigrants were repatriated to the Mainland, down by 377 year-on-year.
A total of 3,883 cases of marriage registration were recorded in 2017, similar to the figure in 2016. Median age at first marriage was 28.8 for the bridegrooms and 27.5 for the brides, up by 0.1 and 0.2 year respectively. Number of divorce cases went up by 234 year-on-year to 1,479, of which divorce by mutual consent took up 94.5%.
At end-2017, number of households totalled 191,500, up by 2,300 year-on-year.
