CE seeking to advance Macao’s contribution to ‘Belt and Road’ initiative

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, meets with the Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission, Mr He Lifeng.

The Government is seeking feedback from the National Development and Reform Commission on a draft agreement aiming to advance Macao’s contribution to the “Belt and Road” initiative.

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, today held a meeting in Beijing with the Commission’s Chairman, Mr He Lifeng, to discuss details of the proposed “Arrangement to Support Macao’s Participation and Contribution to the ‘Belt and Road’ Initiative”, and to set a date for the signing ceremony for the agreement.

Mr Chui also invited the Commission to provide feedback on “Macao’s Medium-to-long-term Plan for Usage and Development of the Waters of the Macao Special Administrative Region (2016-2036)”, which has been submitted to the Central Government for approval.

The Plan proposed a scientific approach to planning regarding usage and development of 85 square kilometres of waters surrounding Macao that are under the SAR Government’s administration. It stated that development should meet the following principles: foster diversification of the city’s economy; serve the public interest; and improve people’s quality of life.

The development of Macao’s traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sector was also discussed during the meeting. Mr Chui said the Government hoped to remain in close contact with the Commission regarding formulation of support policies for the TCM sector, particularly those to be implemented in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation between Guangdong and Macao was already a major Government effort to foster development in this field, Mr Chui noted.

During the meeting, the Chief Executive thanked the Commission for its support in the formulation of Macao’s first Five-Year Development Plan. Mr Chui added that the Government was currently introducing policies to realise the goals set out in the Five-Year Development Plan.

Mr He expressed his support for Macao’s participation in the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (collectively known as the “Belt and Road” initiative), and for the Government’s efforts to integrate Macao’s development with overall national development as outlined in the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

The Commission would make further efforts to support work relating to Macao’s support and participation in the “Belt and Road” initiative, Mr He added.

Macao officials attending the meeting included: the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms O Lam; the Director of the Government Information Bureau, Mr Chan Chi Ping; the Director of the Representative Office of the Macao Special Administrative Region in Beijing, Ms Hong Wai; the Director of the Protocol, Public Relations and External Affairs Office, Ms Lei Ut Mui; and the Chairman of the Macau Investment and Development Limited, Ms Lu Hong.

Officials of the Commission at the meeting included: the Deputy Secretary General and Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Mr Su Wei; and the Director of the Commission’s General Office, Mr Yang Yinkai.
