CE: Traditional Chinese medicine key to Macao’s economic diversification

The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, meets with the Minister of the China Food and Drug Administration, Mr Bi Jingquan.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was a major emerging industry in Macao and key to propel the city’s economic diversification, said today the Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On.

Mr Chui made the comments during a meeting in Beijing with the Minister of the China Food and Drug Administration, Mr Bi Jingquan. The meeting was aimed at exploring views on the development of Macao’s TCM sector; it also served as an opportunity for the Government to seek advice from the Administration on several matters.

The Government paid great attention to the development of Macao’s TCM industry, Mr Chui said. The Government hoped to discuss with the Administration the launching of additional favourable measures at the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Cooperation between Guangdong and Macao, with reference of other similar parks across the country, in order to promote further the sector’s development.

Mr Chui said Macao’s TCM industry had made significant achievements in recent years, including: the positioning of Macao as a platform to boost international exchanges in this field; advancements in TCM-related technologies; and boosting promotion of TCM therapies in Macao.

The Chief Executive expressed his gratitude to the Administration for its support and its efforts in promoting the advancement of Macao’s TCM industry, and the development of the Industrial Park. The Industrial Park is located on Hengqin Island, part of the Zhuhai Prefecture in Guangdong Province.

Mr Bi expressed his support to studying further support measures to be introduced at the Industrial Park. The Administration would give its full assistance to the development of the Industrial Park, and to the creation of further employment and business opportunities for Macao researchers working in the TCM sector.

The Minister said he noted TCM had a strong implementation in Macao, adding that he was aware of the industry’s importance to help promote Macao’s economic diversification.

Macao officials attending the meeting included: the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms O Lam; the Director of the Government Information Bureau, Mr Chan Chi Ping; the Director of the Representative Office of the Macao Special Administrative Region in Beijing, Ms Hong Wai; the Director of the Protocol, Public Relations and External Affairs Office, Ms Lei Ut Mui; and the Chairman of the Macau Investment and Development Limited, Ms Lu Hong.

Officials from the China Food and Drug Administration at the meeting included: the Director of the Department of Legal Affairs, Mr Xu Jinghe; and the Director of the Department of Medical Device Supervision, Mr Wang Zhexiong.
