Opening of the Exhibition “Memories of Moments - Macao and Lusophone African and Asian Regions in Photograph Postcards” in Lisbon

The exhibition “Memories of Moments - Macao and Lusophone African and Asian Regions in Photograph Postcards”, organized by the Archives of Macao, under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, was inaugurated at the Office of Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao in Lisbon on 6 March 2018.

The ceremony was officiated by the Director of the Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao in Lisbon, O Tin Lin; the Director of the Archives of Macao, Lau Fong; the owner of the photograph postcards in this exhibition, João Manuel Loureiro; and the Professor of the Catholic University of Portugal in Lisbon, Jorge Alves. Other guests included the Political Counsellor of the China’s Embassy in Portugal, Xu Zhida; the President of the International Institute of Macau, Jorge Rangel; the President of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Education and Science of Portugal, Luís Filipe Barreto; the Director of the Office of the Organization of Ibero-American States in Portugal, Ana Laborinho; the former President of the Cultural Institute of Macao, Gabriela Pombas Cabelo; the President of the Association of Chinese Women in Portugal, Jin Yunhua,; the Advisor of the Office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao, Andrea Direito; as well as experts and academics.

A photograph postcard is a dual source of information, in which an image on the front, which demonstrates the photographer's vision of the society, is complemented with a personal message on the back. Messages on postcards are written accounts of experiences and happenings in different parts of the world and thus enhance the value of postcards as documents.

The 20th century marked the beginning of international circulation of postcards and of the popularization of photography in world history. To enable the Portuguese public to learn more about the history and culture of Macao and the Lusophone African and Asian countries, the exhibition features over 100 photograph postcards selected from this particular period of the image collection of the Archives of Macao to present a big picture of the history and art, urban-architecture, ethnography, economic development, natural environment and other aspects of life in Macao and Angola, Cape Verde, the former Portuguese India, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Principe and East Timor since the first decades of the 20th century.

The exhibition “Memories of Moments - Macao and Lusophone African and Asian Regions in Photograph Postcards” is open to the public daily from 10am to 7pm, except weekends and public holidays, at the Office of the Economic and Commercial Delegation of Macao, located at No. 115, Avenida de Cinco de Outubro, Lisbon. Admission is free.
