“Macao Library Week” Reading brings people together

Starting in April, the “2018 Macao Library Week” offers several reading promotion activities for the whole family

In order to mark the “World Book Day” celebrated on 23 April, the Cultural Affairs Bureau Public Library, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Library of the University of Macao and the Macao Library and Information Management Association co-organize the “2018 Macao Library Week”, which is held in April and May and is themed “Reading Brings People Together”, allowing the public to open the doors to knowledge, understand emotions and reduce the distance between people, knowledge and the world through reading,.

This year, the Macao Library Week co-organizing entities offer all kinds of activities starting in April, namely thematic lectures and family programmes held by the Public Library. In the lecture “Taste Nature”, Joe Chan, a Macao environmental educator and activist, through the five senses and through reading, will embark on a physical and spiritual journey around books, nature and food with the participants, in order to get to know different perspectives of Macao’s natural environment, exploring the coexistence between man and nature together. In turn, in the lecture “The Literature Landscape of Macao”, Macao writer Eric Chau will share works by Macao authors, the pleasures of reading and the meaning of writing and, thereby, present the characteristics and current status of literature in Macao and probe into the relationship between the city and the development of literature.

Family activities include the “Library Orienteering for the Family—Detective Scavenger Hunt”, which requires grown-ups and kids to play the role of detectives and take on a series of challenges and difficulties in order to help grandpa find his grandchildren’s lost books. The “Series of Reading Workshops for Parents and Children” includes “The Music Playground”, “Move Your Body” and “Fun Facts about Classic Toys”, which, through musical instruments, body rhythm and the sharing of old toys, respectively, stimulate children’s interest and diversified growth, further encouraging them to read and thereby open the doors to knowledge. Workshops and family activities will be conducted in Cantonese, without simultaneous translation.

In addition, the organizing entities will hold two promotional days for the “2018 Macao Library Week” on 21 and 22 April (Saturday and Sunday), at the Old Court Building, as well as an opening ceremony on its first day. Activities during the promotional days include a back periodicals charity sale, a book exchange and bookcrossing, among others, as well as other parallel activities to be held at the Old Court Building, namely workshops, thematic lectures and reading games. All members of the public are invited to participate.

Registration for several activities is now open. All interested parties should register through the Cultural Affairs Bureau electronic activity registration system (www.icm.gov.mo/eform/event).
