Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the exhibition “Modern Painting from the MAM Collection” presents 38 modern paintings by 42 artists from Mainland China, Macao, Portugal and France from today at the special exhibition room on the 2nd floor of the MAM. The exhibition features landscapes and portraits paintings, ranging from a wide variety of styles and techniques, including oil paintings, acrylics and mixed media. The paintings portray rich emotions and complex living conditions between people and nature, people and society and between people themselves, and also reveal the open thinking and artistic characteristics of Macao in its role as a place for cultural integration between east and West. The works span a period from the 1980s to present, reflecting the preliminary achievements of MAM’s modern art collection.
The MAM regularly organizes thematic exhibitions in order to share with the public its achievements over the years. Modern paintings broke with the previous limitations of realism, giving rise to a wide range of new art forms and influencing the development of painting in Macao over the last three decades. As a result, the Museum now organizes this exhibition “Modern Painting from the MAM Collection” in order to introduce relevant works from its modern art collection, allowing visitors to perceive a few characteristics of modernist paintings: consolidation and improvement, generalization and simplification, projection and exaggeration of real objects; structural simplification or graphic reorganization; achievement of the ultimate perception of colour and light in the analysis of these elements; expression of the psychological state and temperament of the author through abstract creative concepts.
The authors of the exhibition span age an interval of sixty-seven years of age and reside in the Mainland China, Macao and Europe respectively. Life is filled with sceneries; artists from different times, places and cultural backgrounds help the audience to observe different sceneries that take place throughout one’s life and experience the high level, depth and warmth of modern art works.
