The 29th Macao Arts Festival (MAF), organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), will kick off at the end of this month. Since the first day of ticket sales, the MAF has received an overwhelming response and high expectations for its various shows. In addition to these programmes, the Organiser is also launching a prized game on Facebook and all are welcome to participate.

The game ‘Let’s Enjoy the MAF Together’ is open for participation from today onwards at the MAF’s Facebook page. Participants who tag two friends in their comment on the game post of the page will stand a chance to win fabulous prizes in a lucky draw, including one round-trip economy class tickets from Macao to any NX-operated destination sponsored by Air Macau and one accommodation package or one spa treatments coupon at MGM. For more information, please stay tuned the MAF’s Facebook page.

Themed around ‘Origin’, which symbolises the ‘spring of life’, the latest edition of the MAF explores a wide range of topics to broaden the audience’s reflections on life.

On occasion of the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth, this year the MAF has invited the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre to present Das Kapital, a theatre play inspired by Marx’s homonymous masterpiece, which examines the traces of capitalism and illustrates the duality of capital by making use of black humour and incorporating elements from Macao. The internationally renowned dance company Cloud Gate 2 will present 13 Tongues, a captivating performance introducing the vigorous beauty of folk culture through a fusion of dance, music and folklore. Contemporary Japanese playwright Tadashi Suzuki will bring his classic theatre production The Trojan Women onto the Macao stage, while the renowned Belgian art group Peeping Tom will perform 32 rue Vandenbranden, a physical theatre play based on the film The Ballad of Narayama. In addition, the MAF has commissioned Singaporean company Nine Years Theatre to jointly produce Pissed Julie, a play adapted from the acclaimed work by Swedish playwright August Strindberg Miss Julie. On the Chinese opera front, the Macao veteran Cantonese opera actor Chu Chan Wa will, as in previous editions, join hands with local Cantonese opera artists and rising stars to present the moving Cantonese opera classic Dream of the Red Chamber.
