Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the land area of Macao measured 30.8 km2 in 2017, up by 0.3 km2 year-on-year. The population density went down from 21,400 persons per km2 in 2016 to 21,100 persons per km2.
The annual mean air temperature edged up by 0.4 ºC year-on-year to 23.0 ºC. The highest temperature of the year was 38.0 ºC in August, the hottest August recorded since 1930. Total precipitation was 1,783.2 mm, down by 552.4 mm year-on-year. There were 8 tropical cyclones in 2017; typhoon signal No.10 was hoisted when Typhoon Hato hit Macao, which was the first time the signal was issued since 2000, and a maximum gust of 217.4 km per hour was recorded; the highest average wind speed was 132.0 km per hour and the storm tide level reached 5.58 m.
As regards air quality, number of "Poor" air quality days recorded by each monitoring station in 2017 was higher than that in 2016, of which the ambient monitoring station in Taipa reported the highest number of "Poor" air quality days, at 28, and recorded one day of “Very Poor” air quality in September. For number of “Good” air quality days, the stations at the roadside of Rua do Campo and in the high density residential area in Northern District registered year-on-year increases of 7 days and 28 days respectively. On the other hand, the ambient station in Coloane recorded 5 exceedance days for fine suspended particulates (PM2.5), down by 2 days year-on-year. Number of days with acid rain was 66 in 2017.
Total water consumption was 88,436,000 m3 in 2017, up by 2.0% year-on-year. Water consumption by the business sector (45,360,000 m3), households (37,391,000 m3) and the government sector (5,685,000 m3) increased by 2.7%, 1.1% and 2.4% respectively year-on-year. The Waste Water Treatment Plants treated an average of 211,003 m3 of waste water per day, down by 8.1% year-on-year.
The Refuse Incineration Plant treated a total of 510,702 tonnes of municipal solid waste, up by 1.6% year-on-year; volume of construction waste sent to landfill totalled 2,933,000 m3, down by 7.3% year-on-year.
