Government responds to U.S. human rights report on Macao

In response to media enquiries regarding the content relating to Macao carried in the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2017, recently issued by the Department of State of the United States of America, the Office of the Government Spokesperson has stated on 21 April the following:

Since its establishment, the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has been strictly adhered to the principle “One country, two systems”, “Macao people governing Macao”, and a high degree of autonomy. The successful implementation of the principles effectively protects the rights and freedoms of Macao residents as stipulated in the Constitution of China and the Basic Law of Macao. These achievements and objective facts have been recognised by anyone holding an unbiased view.

The Government of the Macao SAR expresses its strong opposition to foreign countries’ interference in any form in Macao’s internal affairs that are a domestic matter for China.
