UM graduates Macao’s first PhD student with thesis on Chinese-Portuguese bilingual legal translation

Lu Chi Seng, a PhD student from the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), recently completed an oral defense for his dissertation titled ‘Sustainable Theoretical Framework of Bilingual Legal Translation Based on a Study of the Translation of Social Action Legislation of the Macao SAR’

The defense received unanimous approval from Examination Committee members. Lu is the first PhD student in Macao to have completed an oral defense for a thesis on Chinese-Portuguese bilingual legal translation.

Lu’s research study focuses on the system of Macao’s bilingual legal translation. Original and of high academic value, the paper proposes a sustainable framework theory for improving the current translation methods and skills of legal translators. The study was jointly supervised by Department of Portuguese Head Yao Jingming and Prof Maria Antónia Espadinha from the University of Saint Joseph.

The Examination Committee was chaired by UM Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins. Members of the committee included Prof António Sousa Ribeiro from the University of Coimbra, Prof Alexandra Assis Rosa from the University of Lisbon, Dean of UM’s Faculty of Law Tong Io Cheng, and Prof Maria José Grosso from UM’s Department of Portuguese.
