Demographic statistics for the 1st quarter of 2018


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population was 656,700 as at end-March 2018, an increase of 3,600 quarter-to-quarter; female population (348,100) accounted for 53.0% of the total.

A total of 1,414 live births were delivered in the first quarter of 2018, a decrease of 268 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 763 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 117.2, corresponding to 117.2 male babies per 100 female babies.

Mortality decreased by 33 quarter-to-quarter to 513. The top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (159), Diseases of the Circulatory System (148) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (76).

In the first quarter of 2018, there were 1,007 Chinese immigrants, up by 62 quarter-to-quarter. Individuals granted right of abode totalled 273, a decrease of 74. Non-resident workers totalled 181,345 at the end of the first quarter, up by 1,889.

A total of 1,137 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the first quarter, up by 94 quarter-to-quarter.
