Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) has signed five co-operation memoranda and co-operation agreements at the Opening Ceremony of the Guangdong & Macao Branded Products Fair 2018. Some of the guests from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area who signed the documents revealed that they hoped the signing of these documents could better realize Macao’s role as a platform between China and Portuguese speaking countries, and could help their enterprises ‘go global’ by also making use of e-commerce.
IPIM has respectively signed the “Economic and Trade Cooperation Memorandum on Huizhou and Macao Jointly Participating in the ‘Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area’” with Bureau of Commerce of Huizhou Municipality; the “Economic and Trade Cooperation Memorandum on Dongguan and Macao Jointly Participating in the ‘Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area’” with Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City; the “Economic and Trade Cooperation Memorandum on Jointly Participating in the ‘Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area’” with Jiangmen Bureau of Commerce; and the “Economic and Trade Cooperation Memorandum on Jointly Participating in the ‘Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area’” with Bureau of Commerce of Zhaoqing City. In addition, the Investment Promotion Bureau of Congjiang County has signed the “Strategic Cooperation Agreement” with China Products Company.
According to Fang Shaoming, an associate researcher of Bureau of Commerce of Dongguan City, three areas of co-operation are specified in the Memorandum based on the characteristics of the industries in Dongguan and Macao: 1) Industrial co-operation mainly between the service industry and the MICE industry; 2) The liaison and research for the key development areas in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area; 3) How to make use of the roles of each other as a platform to promote investments in both cities, in particular how to make good use of Macao’s role as a platform between China and Portuguese speaking countries.
He further said that the foreign capital in Dongguan used to source mainly from America and European countries, but after Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’, Dongguan has seen a surge in its exports to countries along the ‘Belt and Road’ and to Portuguese speaking countries. He hoped that the co-operation between Dongguan and Macao could be strengthened and that Dongguan could take advantage of the role of Macao as a bridge to boost the development of the enterprises in Dongguan. Nine enterprises from Dongguan have participated in this year’s Fair; they mainly exhibit food and spices.
Meanwhile, Zhao Ruisi, Director of Jiangmen Bureau of Commerce, revealed that he believed the signing of the Economic and Trade Cooperation Memorandum with IPIM could bring the economic and trade co-operation between Jiangmen and Macao to a higher level. At this year’s Guangdong & Macao Branded Products Fair, which also marks the 10th anniversary of the Fair, Jiangmen has organised eleven enterprises to join the Fair, with many of them already having joined the Fair since the first edition. These exhibitors from Jiangmen mainly showcase and sell food, dried tangerine peel pu'er tea, household appliances, etc.
Zhao Ruisi added that with the co-operation between Macao and Jiangmen always being close, Jiangmen enterprises, through the platform of Macao, have been actively tapping into the market in the countries along the ‘Belt and Road’ and in Portuguese speaking countries over the years. So far more than 900 Macao enterprises have invested and set up offices in Jiangmen. Macao also plays an active role in organising enterprises to take part in the exhibitions in Jiangmen and has set up ‘Macao Street’ at those events. There is also the Industrial Park of Cooperation between Guangdong and Macao in Jiangmen, which can help both cities participate in the building of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area. In the future, products from Jiangmen will also make use of Macao’s role as a platform between China and Portuguese speaking countries and e-commerce to “go global”.
