Demographic statistics for the 2nd quarter of 2018


Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the total population was 658,900 as at end-June 2018, an increase of 2,200 quarter-to-quarter; female population (349,600) accounted for 53.1% of the total.

A total of 1,441 live births were delivered in the second quarter of 2018, an increase of 27 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totalled 758 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 111.0, corresponding to 111.0 male babies per 100 female babies. In the first half of 2018, a total of 2,855 live births were recorded, down by 301 year-on-year.

Mortality totalled 473 in the second quarter, down by 49 quarter-to-quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were Neoplasms (183), Diseases of the Circulatory System (119) and Diseases of the Respiratory System (61). In the first half of 2018, mortality dropped by 34 year-on-year to 995.

In the second quarter of 2018, Chinese immigrants (774) decreased by 233 quarter-to-quarter. Individuals granted right of abode (315) and non-resident workers at end-period (181,499) increased by 42 and 154 respectively.

A total of 998 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the second quarter, down by 139 quarter-to-quarter. In the first half of 2018, there were 2,135 cases of marriage registration, up by 108 year-on-year.
