1. How can the consultation help my child?
In the consultation meeting, parents and teachers may obtain recommendations on how to improve and handle the child’s speech and language, learning, emotional and behavioural problems as well as his/her motor skill problem. If it is necessary, further assessment(s) can be arranged so as to provide the child with appropriate educational placement and treatment suggestions.
2. How long does a consultation session take?
Under general circumstances, each consultation session lasts for 30-60 minutes. However, the actual time varies according to each student’s situation.
3. If I am not available for the consultation meeting, can I arrange for someone else to go with my child?
The consultation service should be applied by the parents/legal guardians. If the parents or legal guardians are unable to attend the consultation session with the child, a letter of authorisation is needed and the child must be accompanied by a person who is familiar with the child’s situation.
4. Will the special education consultation affect my child’s further education or job opportunities in the future?
No, the purpose of the consultation is to provide parents and teachers with the suggestions for improving and handling students’ present problems and offer appropriate assistance to the students; there is no direct impact on their further education or job opportunities in the future.
5. Can the consultation help to detect if my child has attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder?
No, the purpose of the consultation is to decide if the child needs a further assessment to find out whether there is a need to provide extra educational assistance for him/her so as to facilitate his/her learning at school. Should parents/teachers would like to find out if the child has any impairments (e.g. attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder and/or learning disabilities, etc.), they are recommended to seek medical services.
