Objetivo Equips history teachers for binging material culture into the classroom as a tool for students to discover the past.
Mensagem This training encourages local teachers to teach history in innovative ways, by showing them how material culture can be used in the classroom as a lens to discover the past. Almost any topic in history can be introduced using material culture or ‘things’ as a starting point. It not only helps to arouse students’ interest in the topic at hand, but also allows for so-called ‘flipped-classroom’ exercises wherein students are actively engaged in the exploration of a complex and diverse past. Such methods help students to think critically, to ask their own questions about history, and to realize that history offers no easy or straightforward answers. To exemplify this, historical maps will be used during the training session to discover (1) the history of Macao as a place of global contact, cooperation, and contestation; and (2) the history of China as a globally connected empire and nation-state.
