UM PhD student receives prize at China Arbitration and Justice Forum
Chen Zhi, a PhD student from the Faculty of Law (FLL) of the University of Macau (UM),received a third prize at the 12th China Arbitration and Justice Forum, for his paper titled ‘Some Considerations Concerning Non-litigation of Service in Arbitration’. The paper focuses on the service of documents in commercial arbitration in mainland China and proposes a more flexible, efficient, and cost-effective service system to cover the three aspects, namely legislation, arbitration practice, and judicial review.

The University of Macau (UM) will confer honorary degrees on four distinguished individuals, namely Mr Qiao Xiaoyang, Ms Lau Sin Peng, Prof Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, and Dr Roy Chung Chi Ping, for their outstanding achievements and significant contributions to social development and education.

2019PLPEX to Be Held in Mid-October, Introducing “China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Platform Achievement Exhibition”
“The 2019 Portuguese Speaking Countries Products and Services Exhibition (Macao)” (2019PLPEX) will be held from 17 to 19 October at The Venetian Macao. In order to display Macao’s achievements as a Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, the Committee for Development of the Commercial and Trade Cooperation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries decided to introduce the “China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Platform Achievement Exhibition” at the 2019PLPEX at its third meeting last year, highlighting the work the Committee for Development of the Commercial and Trade Cooperation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries has carried out between 2016 and 2019 and its outlook to implement the initiatives and action plan the Central Government put forward during the 5th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. In addition, the 24th Macao International Trade & Investment Fair (24th MIF) will continue to be held concurrently with 2019PLPEX.

The 24th MIF to Kick Off in Mid-October, Establishing a Foothold in Greater Bay Area and Connecting China and Portuguese-speaking Countries to Create Business Opportunities
The “24th Macao International Trade and Investment Fair” (24th MIF) will be held on 17 to 19 October at The Venetian Macao. Cape Verde and Jiangsu Province have been invited to be the “partner country” and the “partner province” respectively of this year’s fair. Through exhibitions, forum discussions, project matching and various activities, the MIF is dedicated to building a bridge for exhibitors and attendees, thus promoting regional economic and trade exchange and co-operation. In addition, the “2019 Portuguese Speaking Countries Products and Services Exhibition (Macao)” (2019PLPEX) will be held concurrently with the 24th MIF.

“Artistic Excellence Exhibition, Department of Cultural and Creative Arts, The Education University of Hong Kong”, the third event organised under the programme "Art Macao", is held at the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT) starting from 27 September. The exhibition is co-organised by IFT and Department of Cultural and Creative Arts of the Education University of Hong Kong, showing the public the outstanding works of the teachers and students, while at the same time, promoting the artistic exchanges between the teachers and students of the two institutes.

Consumer Council sets up hotline during National Day Holiday
As 1st October National Day is approaching, consumption by citizens is expected to increase, so are the number of inbound tourists. Consumer Council held a meeting earlier with Economic Bureau (DSE), Macao Government Tourist Office (DST), Transport Bureau (DSAT), Judiciary Police (PJ), Public Security Police Force (PSP), Macao Custom Service, Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), Health Bureau (SS), and Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau (CTT) to discuss on the protection of consumer rights of local citizens as well as inbound tourists. Representatives on the meeting all agreed to enhance patrol and communication between departments.

Government announces decorations and medals for 2019
The Government has today announced Decorations, Medals and Certificates of Merit awarded for 2019 by the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR). They are being given to 44 individuals and organisations in recognition of, respectively, achievement, outstanding contribution and distinguished service.

Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for August 2019
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitors on package tours and the average occupancy rate of hotels & guesthouses recorded a year-on-year decrease in August. Package tour visitors dropped by 18.8% year-on-year to 635,000, with those from mainland China (499,000), the Republic of Korea (36,000), Hong Kong (7,700) and Taiwan (60,000) falling by 18.1%, 35.0%, 26.5% and 6.0% respectively. In the first eight months of 2019, number of package tour visitors totalled 6,379,000, representing a slowdown in growth of 9.8% year-on-year.
