“Joint Modern and Contemporary Art Exhibition of Year 3, Visual Art Programme, Macao Polytechnic Institute” opens on Friday
To enrich students' practical experience in modern and contemporary art creation, Macao Polytechnic Institute has organised the “Joint Modern and Contemporary Art Exhibition of Year 3, Visual Art Programme, Macao Polytechnic Institute”, with the theme of “Gybe”. The Opening Ceremony will be held on April 30, at 5.30pm in the Macao Polytechnic Institute Gallery, Taipa Campus. Interested parties are welcome to visit.

UM's image tampering detection technology wins championship at international AI competition, team sponsored by Alibaba to participate in research project
A team from the University of Macau (UM), led by Prof Zhou Jiantao in the Faculty of Science and Technology, has successfully developed a new algorithm for digital image tampering detection. With this technology, the team competed with 1,534 teams from around the world at the Security AI Challenger Contest (Season 5) co-organised by Tsinghua University and Alibaba. The team won the championship in the tampering track and a third prize in the detection track, making UM the only university in Macao to have received awards in this event. In addition, the team has been invited by Alibaba to participate in one of its innovative research projects, which will help to promote the commercialisation of scientific research results and academia-industry collaboration.

External merchandise trade statistics for March 2021
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.30 billion in March 2021, up by 26.7% year-on-year. Value of re-exports (MOP1.14 billion) rose by 28.0%, with that of Wine and Watches surging by 1,618.6% and 107.5% respectively. Meanwhile, value of domestic exports (MOP166 million) grew by 19.0%, with that of Bread, pastry, cakes, biscuits & other bakers’ wares and Copper & articles thereof soaring by 750.0% and 15.4% respectively. Total merchandise import swelled by 175.2% year-on-year to MOP11.42 billion, of which imports of Perfumes, Mobile phones, Gold jewellery and Beauty, cosmetic & skincare products jumping by 1,090.7%, 803.0%, 670.6% and 586.6% respectively, but that of Other textile made-up articles declined by 51.6%. Merchandise trade deficit in March 2021 totalled MOP10.12 billion.

IAM sets up temporary collection points for large unwanted furniture items
To make it more convenient for the public to dispose of large unwanted furniture items, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) will set up 60 temporary collection points for large unwanted furniture items in the different districts of Macao from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. from May 1 to 7.

Macao International Museum Day Carnival 2021 opens in May Gathering the power of museums to build a cultural Bay Area
In order to celebrate the International Museum Day on 18 May, 14 museums in Macao co-organize the great annual event of the museum sector, the “Macao International Museum Day Carnival 2021”. The opening ceremony will be held at 3pm on 9 May (Sunday), at the Convention Centre of the Macao Science Centre. The event will feature a wide range of intriguing activities, including game booths, workshops, lectures and drama guided tours. All are welcome to participate.

UM kicks off One Million Dollar Macao Regional Entrepreneurship Competition
This year, the University of Macau (UM) continues to hold the One Million Dollar Macao Regional Entrepreneurship Competition. The Trade Show and Elevator Pitch have been held successfully. The shortlisted teams will compete in the Macao regional final on 5 May. The top three teams that emerge from the regional final will represent Macao in the national final, where they will compete with other regional finalists for the big prize of RMB 1 million as venture capital as well as financing opportunities.

Leisure Area of Kun Iam Statue Waterfront to open for trial, with crowd control for children’s playground
With its construction completed, the Leisure Area of Kun Iam Statue Waterfront will be open for trial operation tomorrow (April 29). Opening hours will be set for the children’s playground and the courts. Anti-epidemic measures such as temperature measurement will be adopted in these areas. The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) predicts that the visitor flow will be heavy during the initial opening period, and after reviewing public opinions, decides to adopt crowd control measures for the children’s playground according to the actual situation.

UM researchers discover correlation between neurocognitive disorder and Traditional Chinese Medicine Body Constitution in elderly Macao residents
Research teams led by Dr Zhao Yonghua and Dr Bian Ying in the University of Macau’s (UM) Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), in collaboration with research teams led by Wang Qi, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Prof Van Iat Kio at Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau, have discovered the correlation between Traditional Chinese Medicine Body Constitution (TCMBC) and neurocognitive disorder in elderly Macao residents, laying the foundation for delaying the onset of dementia among the elderly in Macao. The study has been published in Chinese Medicine and Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, both of which are leading international journals in integrative and complementary medicine.

Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for March 2021
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 120 hotels & guesthouses were open for business in March 2021, an increase of 7 year-on-year; number of available guest rooms rose by 5.8% to 36,000. Data on hotels & guesthouses designated for medical observation were excluded in the compilation of the results. Attributable to a rise in overnight visitors, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms stood at 55.3%, representing a growth of 16.9 percentage points month-to-month and an upsurge of 32.1 percentage points year-on-year.

Macao Grand Prix Museum supports International Museum Day
In active support of the International Museum Day on 18 May, the Macao Grand Prix Museum, under the management of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), will join various local museums to present the “Macao International Museum Day Carnival 2021” at the Convention Center of Macao Science Center on 9 May. The International Museum Day is themed as “The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine” this year. MGTO will hold workshops promoting the Macau Grand Prix at the Carnival for participation of residents and visitors.
