UM Establishes Two Bases to Promote Science Education and Encourage the Younger Generation to Explore the World

The curiosity to explore the world has been responsible for much of the progress mankind has attained throughout its existence. Knowing that the future of society rests in the hands of the youth, the University of Macau (UM), as the only public comprehensive tertiary institution in Macao, feels duty-bound to instill in the youth a passion to explore the unknown. The Macao Base for Primary & Secondary STEM Education was established precisely for this purpose. The base aims to enhance the competitiveness of young people in Macao by improving their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Another educational base, the Macao Base for Primary & Secondary Education in Humanities and Social Sciences, which was established at around the same time, aims to promote whole-person education and inspire students to contemplate issues in humanities and human sciences.


Package tours and hotel occupancy rate for October 2018

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitors on package tours totalled 784,000 in October, a growth of 12.7% month-to-month, yet down by 2.0% year-on-year. Package tour visitors from Mainland China (615,000) and Hong Kong (11,000) dropped by 6.8% and 11.4% year-on-year respectively, while those from the Republic of Korea (52,000) and Taiwan (62,000) surged by 38.4% and 50.1%. In the first ten months of 2018, visitors on package tours totalled 7,288,000, up by 7.1% year-on-year.

Macao Orchestra presents musical feast to welcome the New Year

The Macao Orchestra (OM, from the Portuguese acronym), under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, presents the concert “Starry Vienna – New Year Concert” on Monday, 31 December, at 8pm, at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium. Under the baton of renowned conductor Arvo Volmer, the Macao Orchestra joins hands with Chinese soprano Hui He to present a splendid musical feast to music aficionados. Tickets are now available at the Macau Ticketing Network.


UM Strives to Attain More Achievements in Scientific Research to Meet President Xi’s Expectations

In June this year, President Xi Jinping replied to a joint letter from higher education institutions in Macao, with the instructions that higher education institutions in Macao should produce more graduates who love China and Macao and should attain more achievements in science and technology. Recently, President Xi reiterated the importance of technological innovation. UM is following President Xi’s instructions, determined to live up to the expectations of President Xi and Macao residents.
