UM Attracts and Retains Talented People to Support the Development of the Greater Bay Area
If you want to retain talented people, you need to paint them a future they want to be a part of. To support the Macao SAR government’s policy to develop Macao through education, the University of Macau (UM) has launched various talent recruitment programmes and cross-institutional learning programmes, in addition to providing quality education that meet the needs of the fast-developing Greater Bay Area. The purpose of these strategies is simple: to encourage talented people to stay in Macao and explore opportunities for collaboration with their counterparts in the Greater Bay Area.

UM to hold the Ceremony for the Conferment of Honorary and Higher Degrees this Saturday
The University of Macau (UM) will hold the Ceremony for the Conferment of Honorary and Higher Degrees 2018 on 1 December (Saturday) at 4:00pm in the University Hall.At the ceremony, UM will confer honorary doctorates on Joseph Sung Jao-yiu, Anthony Lau Siu Wing, and Lao Ngai Leong. Higher degrees will also be presented at the ceremony. The honorary degrees for Wang Anyi and Aaron J Ciechanover will be conferred on a separate occasion.

Mainland China and Macao ink new MOU on air transport
The aeronautical authorities of mainland China and Macao signed the new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on air transport today (27 November 2018) in Beijing. The new arrangement increases the destination points in mainland China to 68, extends the destination area for helicopter scheduled services and charters, allows the inter-modal code sharing service and so on.

Employment survey for August-October 2018
Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the general unemployment rate for August-October 2018 was 1.8%, the unemployment rate of local residents stood at 2.4%, and the underemployment rate was 0.4%. All three indicators held stable as in the previous period (July-September 2018).

UM Trains Chinese-Portuguese Bilingual Professionals to Facilitate Communication between Greater Bay Area and Lusophone Countries
Language differences need not be a barrier to cross-cultural communication, as long as we have competent bilingual professionals. For centuries, Chinese-Portuguese bilingual professionals have made cross-cultural communication in Macao possible. Today, they are taking on a new role: facilitating communication and collaboration between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. Indeed, the importance of training Chinese-Portuguese bilingual professionals was elevated to a strategic height during State Council Premier Li Keqiang’s 2016 visit to Macao, when Li announced the central government’s decision to support Macao to become a training base in this area. Besides meeting the needs of the fast-developing Macao and facilitating China’s collaboration with Portuguese-speaking countries, building Macao into a bilingual training base is also crucial for the sustainable development of the Greater Bay Area. In recent years, the University of Macau (UM) has spared no effort to strengthen its Portuguese language education and the training of bilingual professionals, with numerous measures being launched to this end.
